We love to expect, and when expectation is either disappointed or gratified, we want to be again expecting. Samuel Johnson
You can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water. Don't let yourself indulge in vain wishes.
Rabindranath Tagore
Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it. Jack Canfield
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust
January's full Moon in Cancer is on the evening of Saturday 10th January in the United States and Sunday afternoon on January 11 in Australia (*see note below). This full moon is a very interesting one. Not only is it in Cancer, which is the sign the Moon rules (it speaks of home and family and emotions and mother and sense and sensibilities), but it has some very interesting Sabian Symbols illuminating it. The Sabian Symbol for the Moon is Cancer 22: A Woman Awaiting a Sailboat.
How much of a human life is lost in waiting. Ralph Waldo Emerson
This Sabian Symbol is so much about waiting, but not only waiting, awaiting, dreaming, wishing, often in a wistful kind of manner; the 'Woman' may be looking out to sea, staring out a window or staring into space. Regardless, she's waiting for something, perhaps that special person who'll change her life, that job, that special vocation, that windfall of good luck, that gust of wind at her back to push her forward. Gazing into the future, she looks out - "things will be alright when...." Of course, we know that many of us are looking inwards as well. The gaze inwards can bring that space, that part of you that separates from desire, longing, anticipation. I've been interested in the word again - there's a word, 'a-gain'. You do it again and again but do you gain? This degree speaks of habits and opportunities - sometimes it speaks about people who are opportunists - they see something they can have, possess, touch, taste, use and they're at it a-gain, wanting it all, sometimes through the agency of other people's efforts. However, there's often a merry-go-round going on for the woman. Her 'ship' could come in but she might not see it. Perhaps she's asleep and misses the signs, perhaps the ship wasn't good enough, didn't have strong sails or enough comfort built-in. From my book 360 Degrees of Wisdom: Charting Your Destiny With the Sabian Oracle:
You may need to be patient and confident that what you want will come to you. However, there is also a warning not to become dependent on an unreliable outcome. Also, if you are constantly looking out, then you are probably not spending enough time looking back or inwardly at the things you already possess or have ready access to. People dream of the perfect partner suddenly appearing, or the big win in the lottery that will rescue them from their problems or dull lives. The outcome may prove to be less than imagined. Often, the more we look forward to something, the less we enjoy it when it actually arrives. Bearing that in mind, we should draw to ourselves the things we truly desire through positive affirmations and a determined focus on a desired outcome. Clean the barnacles off your 'Sailboat' – the remnants of the past – so that new life, love and spirit can come to you. It is the level of confidence that supports our ‘Waiting’ that can determine the success of the outcome. When the tide changes, your "ship" may very well come in. Make sure you are rowing your own boat and steering your own course as others may have different agendas and your could find yourself becalmed = no forward movement.
Keywords: Waiting for one’s ship to come in. Escapist fantasies that rob everyday life. Travel and the longing for escape. Living in the future vs. being in the here and now. Nervous anticipation. Leaving things to chance. Believing that things will come eventually. Opportunism. Rocking someone’s boat. Expectant waiting. Constant looking to the horizon. Boats. Tides. Creating a safe harbor.
The Caution: The bubble bursting. Waiting for Mr. or Ms "perfect". Ignoring what’s readily available. Longing for that which may never come. Missing opportunities. Always looking over one’s shoulder, seeking better things. Boredom with one’s life. Escapism. Possibilities that are never "good enough". Pining for the unattainable. Not taking life on. Delusions of grandeur.
What is it that you're waiting for? Is there something you can do while the thing you want arrives? What if it doesn't arrive? What if it's different than your vision of how it should be?
Jupiter will have quite a few people wanting to jump ship (whether it's from a job, a commitment, a relationship, a house, as very soon after the full Moon it moves onto Aquarius 3: A Deserter From the Navy Stands Suddenly Aware of a Dawning Truth: Freedom is Never the Result of Compromise. Jupiter will have many yearning for more depth in their lives, more fulfillment, more love, more rewards, and certainly deeper and more rewarding relationships. Relationships that don't stand the test of time will end now, there's nothing surer.
Meanwhile, the Moon says the 'Woman' is standing on the dock. It's hard to always be in the now, no matter how much the authors and philosophers tell us to do it. We DO dream, we DO long for, we DO want to plan and feel and taste the future ahead of time. However, if we're relying on something that will never show up, we have to get off the dock. Whether it's swimming out to your boat or choosing another mode of transport, you could waste precious time looking in a direction from which nothing much will eventuate. How long do you want to keep banging your head against the wall waiting for something or someone to happen or change?
The trick with this full Moon is the opposite Symbol = the Symbol for the Sun. It's Capricorn 22: A General Revealing Nobility of Character by Accepting Defeat Gracefully. This degree describes the situation we're all faced with from time to time; to know when to stop fighting, when to lay down the sword, when to admit that things aren't working out in the direction you're heading. By accepting defeat, we're not saying that all is lost, we're seeing where battling is not doing us any favors and where we could cut our losses in order to move forward. Onward and upward is the direction! But first, acknowledgment, acceptance or admission of failure, loss, wasted energy or expenditure of love, gifts and service to others who don't appreciate, reciprocate or care for you can clear the cobwebs in order to have a more true, loving, reciprocated relationship.
Smack on this full Moon, Mercury goes retrograde. This is congruent with having to wait as well. We feel that things started now may not succeed. This is the time to sort out the cupboards, whether it's the cupboards of your mind or your drawers or garage. There's a sense of things not quite being as they seem with this Mercury retrograde in Aquarius 8: Beautifully Gowned Wax Figures on Display. This degree is likely to have many feeling like what they want, what they need, what's real in their lives is being covered up by a charade, by non communication, but someone or something not wanting to reveal their emotions, their true story, their less savory side. It could be that you feel you've been lied to or used. Seeing through the charades is interesting, although you could find less than you thought was there.
This is backed up by the Moon's north node on Aquarius 10: A Man Who Had For a Time Become the Embodiment of an Ideal is Made to Realize That as a Person He is Not This Ideal. There's often a lot of disillusionment with this degree, especially when it's highlighted by the Moon's karmic north node. People you thought you could rely on, who were there for you, who cared for you, who you looked up to might not be all you thought. Perhaps you're finding yourself acting or appearing in ways less than ideal. The trick is to see through camoflague, subterfuge and coverups to see what's really going on.
Venus is showing us another part of the puzzle and one that is quite different to the degrees above. It's Pisces 9: The Race Begins: Intent on Outdistancing His Rivals, a Jockey Spurs His Horse to Great Speed. Venus wants to get going, she wants to fulfill those dreams, to lose that weight, to win the award, the race, the accolades, the attainment. She wants to run full bore towards her objectives.
Mars probably holds some of the keys to all this. After all, Mars is about action, energy, ambition and drive. The Sabian Symbol for Mars is Capricorn 12: A Student of Nature Lecturing, Revealing Little-Known Aspects of Life. It sounds like a good book with some good advice or a good storyline that will inspire you, a moment or two to think about a plan and some adjustments of expectations and knowing when to fight and when to let go (especially about the small stuff) is the best bet.

Onward and upward as they say. Keep that wind blowing at your back as gusts in your face just give you windburn!
*Many believe that the full Moon is only active or important to take notice of in the few days before and on the full Moon. To my way of thinking, this is not the case. The full Moon energy is in effect some weeks before the full Moon and for some time it's energy is felt into the future, sometimes for months or years. When significant things happen around the time of the full Moon or there's sudden realisations or shifts, then you carry that energy forward for ages, eons even. From my work with clients, I've learnt that sometimes events conspire to lead us up to something happening in years to come all from a new or full Moon. So, if you're reading this sometime after the full Moon, take heart, the symbology is still around and probably still needing to be acknowledged or is yet to be fully processed.
